Abstract:
This work describes an experiment aimed at discovering how humans perceive vanishing points depicted in perspective sketches of engineering shapes. The goal is finding criteria and metrics intended for establishing an algorithmic approach to replicate human perception of vanishing points. Such a new approach is necessary for Sketch-Based Modelling, since the input for most of current image analysis approaches are 2D images taken from a camera, which do not solve satisfactorily the problem of the inherent geometrical imperfection of sketches. We have conducted a pilot experiment aimed at discovering which vanishing points are perceived by people, and under which circumstances they are perceived. We first hypothesise that people are able to detect and locate the vanishing points in a drawing in spite of the inherent imperfections of sketches. We also guess that some factors like distance from vanishing points to the drawing and number and length of lines converging to the vanishing points influence their perception.
