Abstract

The processing and usage of 3D graphics and video have been becoming very important and popular in many areas. At present, some of these areas seem to grow together. 3D television may become one result of this development. In this paper the ideas of the project "Interactive Audiovisual Application Systems IAVAS" at the Technische Universität Ilmenau (university of technology) will be presented and it will be explained how the project's results can be one way getting content for 3D television. The success of 3D television requires both, the availability of 3D displays and the availability and attraction of the content as well. Interactivity will be one important feature of 3D television. Novel approaches to describe 3D scenes containing aural, visual, and audiovisual content allow the user to navigate through the environment. Furthermore, a variety of given viewpoints or the access to single objects can be offered to the user. Because of the three-dimensional presentation of the visual and aural content the user can get a deeper immersion. For this, an object based processing of audiovisual content is required which is widely used in the IAVAS project. Many methods for coding audiovisual objects and scenes are defined in the MPEG-4 standard of the ISO. That's why, the methods of MPEG-4 are explored and evaluated in the IAVAS project. In order to assess these principles complete application systems are necessary. These application systems are also a basis to carry out further developments. One important type of media objects for such applications will be natural 3D video. In this paper some kinds of natural 3D video are discussed and explained how they can be used for 3D television. Finally, some realizations of applications of the IAVAS projects are introduced.
